Emre published a second paper entitled “Electropolymerized poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) coatings on porous carbon electrodes for electrochemical separation of metals” in Advanced Materials Interfaces. Emre used electropolymerization method to coat porous electrodes with PEDOT/PSS with a controllable thickness down to 100 nm’s and used these coated electrodes to separate nickel from sodium in aqueous solutions. Congratulations!!

At this conference, Rik had the opportunity to meet with the academic and industrial leaders in the field of electrochemical engineering and discuss our work on gas diffusion layers with patterned wettability and its industrial application. We look back to an impressive week which resulted in several new insights and exciting connections.

Dr. Kiran Bhatia joins our team as postdoctoral researcher! Kiran is an expert on the synthesis and characterization of novel monometallic/ binary metal foam catalysts by means of electrodeposition, which is pertinent to that of power to value concept such as for electrochemical CO2 reduction. She recently obtained her PhD thesis at the University of Bern, Switzerland. At TU/e, her work will focus on developing novel catalyst architectures on 3d printed electrodes in reversible alkaline fuel cells (RAFC) for space applications. Welcome on board!

In this project, we will investigate, together with our collaborators from Twente (Dr. Davoud Jafari) the use of 3D printing to manufacture porous electrodes for fuel cells. We are thankful to ESA for the funding and excited about the science!

Members of our team - Remy, Maxime, Emre, and Toni - performed neutron experiments of redox flow batteries at the SINQ facility at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland! We studied reactive flows in electrochemical cells and quantified local concentrations as a function of reactor parameters and operating conditions. We are very excited about the results, stay tuned!

Toni was invited to deliver seminar in the School of Chemical Engineering & Analytical Chemistry at the University of Manchester, England. He discussed recent progress on the bottom - up design of porous materials for electrochemical energy conversion and storage!

Toni attended the 236 th Electrochemical Society Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia. He chaired a session on Energy Storage and delivered two presentations, one on bottom - up design of porous electrodes for flow batteries and another one on the use of neutron imaging to quantify organic active species concentration in flow batteries.

The TU/e Membrane Materials and Processes group visited the group of Prof. Ivo Vankelecom at KU Leuven for a collaborative event on membrane materials , UMASS 2019 . Toni delivered an invited presentation where he discussed how engineered porous materials can help realize sustainable electrochemical technologies for energy storage and conversion.

EUROMAT 2019 was celebrated in Stockholm (Sweden). Toni attended the conference and contributed with two presentations on porous electrodes for redox flow batteries and use of pore network simulations of multiphase transport in fuel cells.

Toni is awarded the Veni grant by the Dutch Research Council, division of Applied & Engineering Sciences. Thanks to this award, we will work on a project entitled "Architected electrodes - from computer to battery", where we will design and synthesize highly-organized porous electrodes for redox flow batteries. We are thankful to NWO and look forward to start working on this exciting project!
